Pinholes are the main defect of aluminum foil.

Dust in the aluminum billet, on the rolls, in the rolling oil, and even in the air, with a size of about 6 microns, can enter the roll gap and cause pinholes.

Therefore, it is impossible for an aluminum foil with a thickness of 6 microns to be free of pinholes. The quality of the aluminum foil can only be evaluated by the number and size of the pinholes.

 

With the improvement of aluminum foil rolling conditions, especially dust prevention and effective filtration of rolling oil, the number of pinholes in aluminum foil is increasingly related to the quality and processing defects of aluminum billets.

 

It is generally believed that pinholes are mainly related to gas content, inclusion compounds, and composition segregation.

 

Effective aluminum liquid purification, filtration, and grain refinement can all help reduce pinholes.

Of course, improving the hardening characteristics of the material by means such as alloying can also help reduce pinholes.

 

There are many other factors that cause pinholes during the aluminum foil rolling process, and they can even be catastrophic.

The necessary conditions for reducing aluminum foil pinholes are: effective rolling oil filtration, short-term replacement of rolls, good dust prevention measures, the use of large rolling grains, and low tension rolling will also help reduce pinholes on the surface of the aluminum foil.
